Builders fund TMC work?

The propriety of the Thane Municipal Corporation using financial help from developers and builders to renovate their offices is now being examined by the the State Urban Development Department, according to Loksatta on Tuesday.

The paper said that recently TMC computerised its Nagar Vikas Office with Rs 35 lakh from two builders, Rustomjee and Lodha who have substantial co...nstrucion activity in Thane. This issue was brought to public attention by a Shiv Sena MLC, Pratap Sarnaik who seems to have a feud with the Commissioner, R A Rajeev.

The commissioner, in turn, filed a comprehensive report to the State's Urban development Department.

According to the paper, such - and even larger sums had - been provided by the Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry. It had funded Rs 1 cr for some 'development' work of the TMC.

The State Government had, in the wake of this controversy, has sought a full report from the Corporation.

Comment: Thane is fast spreading with the city peppered with several new projects for commercial and housing spaces. Suspicion is that such assitance from builders or their lobbies could force quid pro quos now or in the future or there may have been favoures rendered to them in the past. Builder and developers are know to cut corners, sometimes brazenly disregard rules and bribe their way.

For information, the TMC has a few months ago levied penalty worth crores on these two builders for certain violations. It will be interesting to know from the TMC whether the builders have paid the penalty or whether there was any reduction in the same and whether this gesture is a quid pro quo...
